Biography

ANAKHEMIA is the artist persona of Afra Khan who plays electronic mind-body music.

Her mission is to inspire dialogue in the human psyche through the method of audio-visual storytelling. With deep-rooted interests in inter-planetary exploration, wireless technology and abstract sound frequencies, her music can be expected to flow through a canvas of sonic textures that are anti, raw, evocative, cinematic and avant-garde.

Her artistic persona is sometimes deployed as a messenger for the
a contingent at Mothership 1711 orbiting in Galaxy RA. Growing up between places, with a majority of her childhood spent in Saudi Arabia, she finds the notions of conformity, belonging, and identity very illusionary and dangerous ideas that reflect in the versatile sound of her music and live / DJ sets. As a DJ, she has played gigs in the Middle East, Asia and Ibiza.

She was also the first and only writer in Saudi Arabia to cover EDM in the Middle East's leading English daily, ARAB NEWS, and has interviewed the likes of heavyweights like Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold and more. The increased opportunities then led her to start Saudi Arabia's first publication, Verse 69, focused on electronic dance music, which folded with Ibiza's annual the summer season of 2016. In 2013, she was shortlisted at the UK Songwriting Contest, judged by top Grammy, Emmy, CMA and Brit Gold and Platinum award-winning producers and artists for her track, ‘Run Into The Wild,’ in the lyrics category.

In August 2015, her debut demo ‘The Prophecy’ peaked in the Top 10 positions in the Casablanca Records (sub-label of Universal Music) demo contest where she received positive acclaim from the label’s A & R executives and scored one of the highest plays among the submissions.
She self-released her debut track, ‘The Prophecy’ in November 2015 and has received support from the press and veterans in the electronic dance music industry such as the Techno Originator - Juan Atkins, André Winter, Discwoman and many more.

The music video for 'The Prophecy' was then selected for display at ‘Techno & the City’ art exhibition hosted by Techno & Philosophy and Fiumano Art Gallery in London in November 2016, where it shared space with pioneering visual artists who’ve collaborated with Techno music legendaries like Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills and many more. In 2017, she was nominated in the Best Electro Act category by Radio Wigwam, U.K. She was also curated under the VISIBILITY banner in 2019 at the premier electronic music exhibition - Expo Electro - hosted at the Philharmonie de Paris, where she was represented alongside visual works of legendary electronic musicians like Daft Punk and Kraftwerk.

Her hybrid live set titled 'SATYRNUS - The Wise Prince,' performed for the Women in Experimental Festival, March 2021 is archived at The British Library, The U.K. She continues to be inspired by the position of technology in music and pop-culture, while remaining curious about the influence of electronic music on human behavior.
